Sales Tax Calculator
Add sales tax or VAT to a price, or pull out the tax already baked into a total. Enter any rate and see net, tax and gross instantly.
Add or extract tax with one tool
Sales tax (and its cousin VAT) is a percentage added to the price of goods and services. Sometimes you have the pre-tax price and need the total; other times you have a tax-inclusive total and need to know how much of it is tax. This calculator does both — just switch modes.
How the math works
- Add tax: total = amount × (1 + rate). The tax is amount × rate.
- Extract tax: net = total ÷ (1 + rate). The tax is total − net.
Works for any region
Because you enter the rate yourself, the tool handles US state and local sales tax, UK and EU VAT, GST and any other percentage-based tax — all without an internet connection or any live lookups.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Choose 'Add tax', enter the pre-tax amount and your tax rate. The calculator multiplies the amount by the rate to find the tax, then adds it to show the total you'll pay.
How do I work out the tax already in a price?
Choose 'Extract tax' and enter the gross (tax-inclusive) total. The tool divides it by 1 plus the rate to recover the net price, and the difference is the tax included — useful for receipts and VAT-inclusive pricing.
Which tax rate should I use?
Enter whatever rate applies to your purchase — US state and local sales tax, or a VAT/GST rate elsewhere. Because you supply the rate, the tool works for any region and stays fully offline.
Is my data private?
Yes. All math happens in your browser. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
