Fraction Calculator
Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions and get the answer simplified, as a mixed number and as a decimal.
Fraction math without the headache
Common denominators, reducing, flipping for division — fraction arithmetic has a lot of little steps that are easy to slip up on. Enter your two fractions, pick an operation, and this calculator handles the whole process and shows the answer three ways at once: as a fully reduced fraction, as a mixed number, and as a decimal.
How each operation works
- Addition & subtraction use a common denominator, then combine the numerators.
- Multiplication multiplies numerators together and denominators together.
- Division multiplies the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second.
Reading the results
Every answer is reduced to lowest terms automatically. If the result is an improper fraction, the mixed-number view splits it into a whole number plus a remainder, and the decimal view is handy for measurements and quick comparisons. Negative fractions are fully supported — just put the minus sign on the numerator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add or subtract fractions?
Enter the numerator and denominator of each fraction, choose + or −, and the calculator finds a common denominator, combines the numerators and simplifies the result automatically.
How do I multiply and divide fractions?
To multiply, the tool multiplies the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide, it multiplies the first fraction by the reciprocal (flip) of the second. Both results are reduced to lowest terms.
What is a mixed number?
A mixed number combines a whole number with a proper fraction, like 1 1/2. When the answer is an improper fraction (numerator larger than denominator), the calculator also shows it in this easier-to-read form.
How are fractions simplified?
The calculator divides both the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor, giving the smallest equivalent fraction — so 8/12 becomes 2/3.
