Why use a word counter?

Whether you're writing an essay with a word limit, an article for SEO, a tweet, a meta description or a college application, knowing the exact count keeps you on target. This tool goes beyond a simple word count: it breaks your text down into characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines, and estimates how long it will take to read aloud or silently.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your text into the box. The statistics on the right update with every keystroke.
  2. Read the breakdown. Words and characters are the headline numbers; sentences, paragraphs, lines and read time give you the full picture.
  3. Copy or clear when you're done — your text is yours alone and is never uploaded.

What gets counted

  • Words — sequences separated by spaces or line breaks.
  • Characters — every character including spaces, plus a separate count with spaces removed.
  • Sentences — text segments ending in . ! or ?
  • Paragraphs — blocks separated by a blank line.
  • Reading & speaking time — estimated from average reading (225 wpm) and speaking (130 wpm) speeds.

Common word and character limits

  • Meta description (SEO): ~155–160 characters.
  • Title tag (SEO): ~50–60 characters.
  • Tweet / X post: 280 characters.
  • College essay: often 250–650 words.
  • Abstract: typically 150–300 words.

Frequently asked questions

How does the word counter work?

Just type or paste your text into the box. Every count updates live — there's no button to press and nothing to upload.

Is my text private?

Yes. All counting happens locally in your browser with JavaScript. Your text is never sent to a server, logged or stored.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 225 words per minute, and speaking time about 130 words per minute. They're estimates — your actual pace may vary.

How are words and sentences counted?

Words are runs of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Sentences are counted by terminal punctuation (. ! ?). Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by blank lines.

Is there a character limit?

No. Because everything runs in your browser, you can paste essays, articles or entire documents and it stays fast.
